A great alternative to the busy Arenal Volcano National Park, the Arenal 1968 Reserve takes its name from the most devastating eruption of the volcano in living memory. Though the 1968 eruption claimed 78 lives (and a small shrine can be found here commemorating the victims), the hiking trails in this reserve cover completely safe designated areas of beautiful national park through lush forests leading to a section of original volcanic lava flows. You’ll also be able to enjoy some wonderful views of the lake, before finishing the walk at the main observatory. Here you can take a well-deserved drink and snack before transferring back to your hotel (total tour duration is approximately five hours).
